SCLL Umpire Interaction Policy

Respect • Sportsmanship • Safety

Stanwood Camano Little League (SCLL) has a zero-tolerance policy for behavior that is disrespectful, discourteous, or may be interpreted as intimidating toward umpires. Our goal is to create an environment that is umpire-friendly while teaching players to respect authority.

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action, including suspensions or removal from SCLL.

General Expectations

Players, coaches, and fans must understand that critical behavior toward umpires will not be tolerated. Unlike professional sports environments, SCLL prioritizes development, respect, and sportsmanship.

Treat every umpire the way you would want your own child treated. It is far more productive to respond to difficult calls by focusing on how to improve and overcome adversity, rather than criticizing an umpire who is doing their best.

Our umpire crew is made up of teen and adult volunteers, and all must feel safe, supported, and respected.

Parent Interaction With Umpires

Parents should attend games with the understanding that missed calls are part of the game - even at the highest levels. Over time, these calls tend to balance out.

  • No questioning or comments from spectator areas regarding umpire calls.
  • No direct interaction with umpires during or after games.
  • Questions should be directed to your coach at an appropriate later time.

As outlined in the Parent Code of Conduct:

“Any parent guilty of improper conduct at any game or practice will be asked to leave the facility and be suspended from the following game. Repeat violations may result in multiple game suspensions or loss of the privilege of attending games for the season.”

Coach Interaction With Umpires

Coaches are leaders on and off the field. Their behavior sets the standard for both players and parents. All communication with umpires must be respectful, calm, and professional.

  • Model the highest standard of sportsmanship at all times.
  • Communicate with umpires in a respectful and deferential manner.
  • Take responsibility for player and parent behavior.
  • Intervene early in situations that may escalate.

Coaches who show disrespect toward umpires will face disciplinary actions outlined in the Coach Code of Conduct.

Reporting Concerns

Any feedback or concerns regarding an SCLL umpire should be submitted respectfully via email to the League UIC.
